Do I need a referral?

No, you do not need a referral to see a Physiotherapist.

Do you charge medical aid rates?

Yes, if you are concerned about whether or not they will cover Physiotherapy, please contact your medical aid. If they do not cover Physiotherapy the account will stay your responsibility.

Is there a co-payment?

No.

What should I bring?

Bring any referral letter, reports, X-rays or scans that are relevant to your condition or injury with you.

What should I wear?

You should wear loose fitting clothing so you can expose the area that we will be evaluating and treating. For example, if you have a knee problem, it is best to wear shorts. For a shoulder problem, a tank top is a good choice, and for low back problems, wear a loose fitting shirt and pants.

How long does the treatment take?

A thorough initial assessment will normally take 45 minutes. If you have multiple areas requiring treatment, please let our reception know at the time of booking. Follow-up treatments will take between 30 to 60 minutes. If you are a new patient please arrive five to ten minutes prior to your appointment to complete some basic paperwork.

Will Physiotherapy help my problem?

Physiotherapy can help most problems involving muscles and joints.  If Physiotherapy cannot help your problem, we will let you know and suggest the appropriate person/practitioner who can help.

What does the physical exam include?

The Physiotherapist does a physical evaluation. Changing or removing clothes is required to see the problem area. The Physiotherapist may touch the problem area to see if there is any tenderness, swelling, or heat. Using their hands, they may test the problem area to see if weakness exists, if movement is limited, and how much pain there is.

How many visits will I need?

This is highly variable. You may need one visit or you may need months of care. It depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, your past medical history, etc. You will be re-evaluated on a monthly basis.

Are treatments painful?

For many patients, one of the primary objectives is pain relief using various techniques and tools. In some cases, Physiotherapy techniques can be painful, for example, recovering knee range of motion after total knee replacement. Your Physiotherapist will utilise a variety of techniques to help maximise your treatment goals. It is important that you communicate the intensity, frequency, and duration of pain to the therapist. Without this information, it is difficult for the therapist to adjust your treatment plan.

Will I be expected to do anything in between treatments?

Yes, but we cannot force you! We provide you with the right exercises to do between visits to ensure your recovery is optimised. We will supply custom made exercise sheets for you to take home.
